Millmerran Outreach OT Clinic

When: 25-27 September 2024

Where: St Joseph’s School, Millmerran

“Expanding Horizons, Empowering Futures”

We are thrilled to announce Paediatric Potentials' fifth visit to Millmerran, set for the 25 to 27 September 2024. Thank you for the continued support of St Joseph's School, Millmerran, for providing their well-equipped school to operate our clinic from. This opportunity has been made possible thanks to the generous support of Principal, Mrs Michelle Sanders, and the Diocese of Toowoomba Catholic Schools.

Our Approach to Occupational Therapy for Rural Communities

Our commitment to supporting the children of Millmerran brings us to the community each school holidays, offering intensive therapy sessions tailored to individual needs.

At our main clinic, we typically see children every fortnight to maintain regular contact, implementing strategies, monitoring progress, and making necessary adjustments to ensure progressive achievement of goals. However, we recognise the challenges faced by rural communities in accessing services readily. To address this, we offer children the opportunity to receive intensive therapy sessions during each school holiday, accompanied by a detailed Home Program or a School/Kindy Tip Sheet for implementation between visits. This approach is designed to minimise the gap in accessing face-to-face therapy services, ensuring children in rural areas receive consistent and effective support.

Over the three days, we provide 2-3 sessions per client, coupled with your choice of either a Home Program or School Tip Sheet (or both depending on the number of sessions booked). This approach is designed to extend our support beyond the clinic, helping each child to continue their development both at home and in their educational environment.

Understanding the critical need for consistent therapy intervention, we've tailored this unique service delivery model to bridge the gap between therapy access and the specific needs of each child in Millmerran. This new partnership with St Joseph's School represents a significant milestone in our mission to enhance the reach and availability of our services, ensuring every child receives the support they need to thrive.

Comprehensive Core Services for Children

Our upcoming clinic will continue to focus on delivering our core services, tailored to meet the unique needs of each child. These services include:

  1. Intensive Individual Therapy Intervention: Tailored, one-on-one therapy sessions designed to meet specific developmental needs. All sessions are accompanied by either a Home Program or School/Kindy Tip Sheet, to provide OT-specific activities and strategies to support your child further at home or in their educational setting.

  2. OT Assessments: Comprehensive evaluations to identify strengths and areas for development, informing personalised intervention plans.

  3. ADOS Assessment: Specialised assessments for autism spectrum disorder, providing insights and guidance for families and caregivers.

  4. Functional Capacity Assessment: Evaluations aimed at understanding a child’s ability to perform everyday tasks, supporting goal setting and intervention planning.

Our Partnership with St Joseph’s School

Our collaboration with St Joseph's School represents a significant opportunity to utilise a welcoming and familiar environment for the children and families of Millmerran. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to supporting the local community and enhancing service delivery in a space conducive to learning and growth.

How many sessions are recommended?
At our outreach clinics, we suggest each child attends 2-3 sessions. This is ideal to make the most of the limited time we have and to ensure the kids get a solid start with the therapy concepts and strategies. These sessions help in building a strong bond with therapy, which is crucial for the kids. It sets them up nicely for ongoing development during the term, following their home program. Plus, there's the added option of continuing support with our therapists through telehealth sessions on Microsoft Teams. This combination makes sure each child gets consistent, customised support, helping them to keep growing and learning.
